A Bit About Me

I am a junior at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School (BCC). I play the violin in our school orchestra and am a dancer in our school POMs team. I am also a state finalist for the Miss Teen Maryland pageant. As a daughter of immigrants and a grandchild of refugees, I am a firm believer in the merits of hard work and upward mobility through education. I have had opportunities to travel abroad and live in Africa as a child, and this has shaped my thinking and actions. At BCC, I am fortunate to be surrounded by diverse friends and enjoy activities that combine fun and learning, with a desire for greater equity and societal improvement.

I believe in advocating for causes that I believe are just and in need of support. This ranges from working at Zenaviv, which seeks financial stability for artists with autism, to supporting more resources for under-funded schools. Greater equity and fair-play are the guiding principles at the heart of my community service and advocacy efforts. As I have looked deeper into these issues, I have found that collecting, allocating and managing funds are critical for the success of any effort - be that public awareness through targeted marketing, or supply of greater resources for the arts in under-funded schools. I am good with numbers, and budgeting, and meticulous with keeping accounts and planning expenses. I also enjoy the exercise of planning - whether it is a campaign, or the next fundraiser for a cause.

What I hope to gain if elected to serve as MCR’s Treasurer is a deeper knowledge of how funds flow in educational institutions, and how decisions on financial allocation are made. I feel passionately about improving our education system. Making it fairer and more equitable requires an understanding of resource allocation decisions and a county-wide planning perspective. The position of Treasurer at the MCR-SGA would provide me with a unique opportunity to affect change by using resources efficiently. It would also give me an opportunity to be exposed first-hand to the decision-making process at the County level. This is why I am interested in running for the position of MCR-SGA Treasurer.

LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

Cultural Advocacy Coordinator for Montgomery County Regional Student Government Association (MCR-SGA). I am working with diverse individuals to ensure all voices are adequately represented and advocated for in our county’s educational system.

2021 Semi-finalist for Montgomery County's 44th Student Member of the Board of Education.

Vice President of B-CC’s Minority Scholars Program (MSP). MSP was founded to ensure students from diverse backgrounds felt empowered and inspired to make a difference in their communities. We have created a close-knit family in which all students feel accepted regardless of perceived identity.

Fellow at 2020 Lazarus Leadership Program; Co-founder of Youth For Equity (YFE), a student-led initiative working to improve equity and inclusiveness in our educational system. We have built a large virtual community through active dialogue with administrators, educators, students, and parents from different school districts and backgrounds. We also follow through with actionable steps to create lasting policy and culture change. We have acquired over 100 student members, 50 staff members, and fostered collaboration with our school’s Principal, administrative team, and county-wide education and equity professionals. Our outreach has also included middle schools.

Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee for Varsity POMs dance team, and member of the Varsity Spring Track team.  I enjoy a physically active, healthy vegan lifestyle and am a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
